Working with community leaders to make the conservation of the forest more attractive than its destruction.
Amigos de Iracambi is a Brazilian registered non-profit (also registered in the U.S. as a 501(c)3) located in Brazil’s Atlantic Forest, one of the world’s top biodiversity hotspots. Its objective is to figure out better ways of forest care and protect the extraordinary biodiversity while generating forest-based incomes and raising living standards for local communities. The organization’s base is the Iracambi Research Center, located in a protected area that includes old growth and succession forest, swamps and partially cleared land.
Facilities at the Center include accommodation for 28 researchers, volunteers and visitors, computer lab and classroom, field laboratory, a multi-use Forest House, a restaurant, forest nursery, system of forest trails and a GIS. The organization also owns the Pico da Graminha Forest Reserve, approximately three kilometers from the Center, where it is completing the Mountain House as a base for researchers and visitors.
